Meet John Mutter

Silver Dog is a family-owned and family-operated business grounded in honesty, integrity, hard work and an unwavering dedication to the families who trust us with their property.

Today, John lives with his wife, Jennifer, their two sons, and their Weimaraner, Axl—the “Silver Dog” for whom the company is named—on a small former horse farm in the foothills of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains. Together, they are proud to call East Tennessee home.

Silver Dog founder John Mutter was raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania, where antiques, restoration and the search for overlooked treasures were part of everyday life. His father was an experienced antique scout and restoration expert, and John learned from childhood in flea markets, antique malls, auctions, homes and collections—developing an eye for quality, rarity, condition and value that can only come from handling the real thing.

That early education became a career. Over several decades, John has searched, evaluated, bought, sold and sourced property from thousands of homes, estates and private collections across the country. His experience includes extensive sourcing for professional film and television set decorators, and liquidating a massive aerospace manufacturing facility.

That breadth of experience shaped Silver Dog Estate Sales. John had seen too many estates where ordinary items were priced too aggressively while genuinely important pieces were undervalued or directed to the wrong market. Silver Dog was built around a different idea: recognize what matters, price it intelligently, find the right buyer and work relentlessly to maximize the value of an estate for the family we represent.

No one can be an expert in everything, and Silver Dog does not pretend otherwise. When an estate contains something outside our particular areas of expertise, we have a network of experts, established over decades, that we consult with on collections that require specialists. Clients need someone experienced enough to recognize when an item deserves a closer look—and connected enough to know who should look at it.
